This book is meant to assist teachers in implementing the five-step guided reading process in their classrooms. Aimed primarily at K-third grade teachers, it provides information on the guided reading process as far as the student and teacher are concerned, and how to manage the process in your classroom. Guided reading is not an easy strategy to initiate, mainly because the teacher really needs to understand the process as a whole rather than beginning it in a piece-meal fashion. Most schools provide a series of workshops to initiate the program and insure successful application. More successful training applications actually have teachers observe the process in action. While this book provides support in learning the foundations and techniques, it does not provide enough information on expected benchmarks and the assessment of these benchmarks, which are essential in moving students through the process. However, it is a good resource for informing and supporting teachers in the overall process. A glossary, index and resources for further study are included. 2003, Zephyr Press,
