Overview

Renowned theater director Yvonne Brewster retraces the relationship with her mother in this poignant and heartwarming biography. Amidst the rampant racism of Europe in the 1950s, Yvonne moved to England from Jamaica to pursue a career in drama and, in spite of her discouraging instructors, became one of the first black theater directors in Europe. Sharply written and full of dry wit, these stories chronicle Yvonne’s journey from exchange student to theater revolutionary, spanning more than 85 years and several countries, and feature reflections on the film, theater, and the colorful characters—undertakers to prime ministers—that she met along the way.
