Overview

In The U.S. Labor Movement: References and Resources, Robert N. Stern and Daniel B. Cornfield have arranged a thorough, annotated bibliography of critical resources associated with the most significant concerns facing the U.S. labor movement. This unique reference tool which offers over 1,200 entries, is divided into nine chapters and includes a thorough cross-classification system. Opening with "A Sociology of the Labor Movement: Guide to Research and Sources," Stern and Cornfield stress the importance of a sociological point of view in the study of the labor movement. In this chapter the authors divide the study into two major sections: the emergence, structure, and functioning of the movement itself; and its impact on society. The U.S. Labor Movement also examines the various groups of people affected by the labor movement - migrant farm workers, minorities, women, office and service workers, and industrial workers, among others - as well as other social movements that followed it, including the civil rights, women's, and anti-war movements. Another chapter in this volume, "Social Movement Theory", discusses class relations and theories of collective action. Many entries focus on the growth and decline of U.S. trade unions. Other topics examined in this notable guide are the organizational structure of labor movement, movement mobilization, labor and politics, impact of the labor movement on social inequality, and anti-labor countermovements. Stern and Cornfield supply the reader with a precise index, as well as a guide to the sources listed here to assist research. The U.S. Labor Movement will be cherished as a fundamental resource to researchers, labor and union groups, Human Resource managers, and students in the fields of history, sociology, industrial relations, human resource management, political science, organizational behavior, psychology, and labor studies.
