Reviewer:Martin I Resnick, M.D.(University Hospitals of Cleveland)
Description:This is the fourth edition of a book that presents fundamentals of urology without attempting to describe surgical procedures. The format is similar to previous editions, the last of which was published in 2001.
Purpose:The purpose is to present the basic elements of urology. The book covers nonsurgical topics and does not include surgical techniques. These objectives are of value particularly because the book is directed at trainees in urology. If surgical techniques are desired, readers are directed to standard urological texts.
Audience:The book is written primarily for trainees in urology but should be of interest and value to other physicians, such as those in family practice and in emergency room medicine. The author is a credible authority who has been appropriately updating this book since its first edition in 1988.
Features:The book is divided into two parts: chief presentations and selected topics. The first part addresses typical urological symptoms of patients presenting with difficulties and the second reviews specific disease processes. This is a general review and it appropriately addresses common problems. It would be helpful if more illustrations were included, and these do not necessarily have to be very elaborate.
Assessment:This is an appropriate update and the book is of value to those training in urology. It is clearly written and benefits from the experience gained in developing prior editions.
