From The Critics

Reviewer: Daniel F Soteres, MD, MPH(Tulane University School of Medicine)
Description: This is a comprehensive review of multiple disciplines to aid preparation for the medical licensing exams. There are 15 tests and, at 50 questions per test, the book follows the format of the actual licensing exam.
Purpose: The purpose is to ensure that your first test is not the real test. The author edits a fine example of USMLE-type questions and organizes each test section to cover a broad range of topics.
Audience: It is intended for interns who are preparing for their licensing exams and it is ideal for the busy intern. With its coverage of important topics, this book offers scaffolding to reinforce one's knowledge, confidence, and skills.
Features: Fifteen tests provide 750 questions for rapid review of high yield USMLE step 3 information. The questions review multiple areas including internal medicine, psychiatry, neurology, obstetrics/gynecology, surgery, and pediatrics. The strongest areas for review are internal medicine, psychiatry, and obstetrics/gynecology. In particular there are some excellent questions about endocrinology, infectious disease, emergency management, and sports medicine. The weakest areas are pediatrics, which is poorly represented, and radiology because the films are poorly reproduced. Another shortcoming are the short explanations at the end of each section which offer complete answers but little in the way of reasoning.
Assessment: "This is a good comprehensive review of multiple disciplines to aid preparation for the licensing exams. The format allows quick review of high-yield topics for the busy intern. Systematic review of these practice tests should provide guidance to areas needing further study. "
