The "Celebrate the States" series provides an in-depth look at all fifty states. Each title includes chapters about geography, history, people, government, the economy, and notable landmarks of the state. While the books are understandably text-heavy, they provide ample photographs, art, and charts. The "State Survey" section at the end summarizes the entire book succinctly. The survey includes the state flag, seal, other state symbols, and the state song. More facts about geography are summarized, along with highlights of the state economy. A timeline of events, a list of famous residents, calendar of festivals and celebrations, and a tour of the state conclude the book. Information throughout is well organized and easy to understand. Students preparing a report on Utah will find a wealth of information here. The history chapter gives a solid overview of the founding and growth of Utah without shying away from the significant role played by the Mormon Church. However, it includes only two brief sections on life after World War II. A discussion of the state's very small minority population seems forced to mirror other books in the series. The geography chapter highlights the state's natural beauty, the interior sea of the Great Salt Lake, and Zion National Park. Utah is a worthy addition to any school or community library's reference section. Reviewer: Kristina Cassidy

Gr 4-8-These logically organized, and well-documented overviews present thorough and eye-pleasing information for reports. Each book begins with quotes from famous residents of the state, followed by sections on geography, history, culture, and travel. Interesting sidebars appear throughout the texts, commenting on endangered species, battles, or holidays. The state song and a recipe utilizing a state product are included. Numerous full-color photos, graphs, and maps extend the texts and contribute to the attractiveness of this series. While these books tend to promote a rosy view of the states, the material is reliable and easily accessible.-Kate McLean, DeKalb County Public Library, Tucker, GA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
