Synopsis

Braybrooke (philosophy, emeritus, Dalhousie U.) revisits Jeremy Bentham's master idea that statistical evidence should determine serial policies and meets the standard objections against utilitarianism. Braybrooke argues that act-utilitarianism cannot be carried out except under the auspices of rules. He emphasizes the importance of revision and offers renovations to utilitarianism that replace calculus with the census notion and provide for needs prior to concern about utility.
