When I have read biographies of Paul Bunyon and Superman, I always thought of them as tall tales. However, this work about one of the world's most beautiful love-goddesses actually comes across as a "biography." Dalby has done a fabulous job in portraying Venus as a sensual and seductive goddess, the likes of which have never been known before or after her creation. The biography takes the reader on one adventure after another and shows that the goddess has human qualities such as jealousy and giving birth to a son. I must admit I really enjoyed this work even though when I started it, I had the preconceived notion that it might be hokey. I was definitely wrong. The information provided is thorough and well laid out so that anyone reading this text will be able to learn and follow the historical story line. The author provides a section containing "Life Notes," "Sources," and recommendations for further reading. Due to the topic and the fact that Venus appears naked on the front cover, I would say it would be best read by an adult. I am sure that men, being mere mortals, will find Venus absolutely captivating and will want to learn more about her. 2005, Getty Publications, Ages 16 up.
