Venus Williams is now known as a tennis champion and has made history by competing against her sister, Serena Williams, who is also a tennis superstar. Venus was not born into a family of tennis players. Venus came from an inner-city neighborhood with poorly maintained tennis courts. Her father, determined to see his girls succeed, taught himself to play tennis. He also taught Venus and Serena to play the game. They practiced and competed in California before moving to Florida to undergo formal tennis training. Despite lots of criticism, Venus Williams won many tennis titles, even winning against her sister in the U.S. Open championship. Venus rose into tennis stardom through hard work and determination. This biography details Venus Williams' rise from poor family to tennis phenomenon. It would be useful for a school or public library wishing to provide students with informational biographies at an upper elementary reading level. Includes color photos and sidebars with additional information through a statistics chart, glossary, and website information in the back. It is part of the "Benchmark All-Stars" series. 2004, Benchmark Books/Marshall Cavendish, Ages 8 to 12.β Marcie Flinchum Atkins
