Children's Literature

This simple little story tells of two children playing out in the snow with their "white fluffy" dog, Snowflake. Readers will love the fact that no one quite understands that the children are looking for their dog, who has gotten "lost" in the snowstorm. We seen them approaching a lady shoveling the sidewalk, a friendly florist making a delivery, a baker delivering "white fluffy cakes," a crossing guard, and a mail carrier who pronounces that not even "snowflakes can stop [him]!" Everyone thinks that the children are talking about the snowflakes! After they flop down in a snow bank, the elusive Snowflake shows up with a bright red ball that stands out against all of the white snow. "That's not a snowflake. That's a puppy!" the children are told. "This is who we were looking for all along," they respond. The expressive drawings convey a lot of emotion with minimal strokes; for example, the children's eyes, though just dots, convey much about their emotions as they search for Snowflake and when they are reunited. The multi-ethnic faces reflect a real community. The special draw of this book is the double-page spread that shows all of the characters in their places as the children dash out their front door with Snowflake. When we are shown the characters up close, readers can go back to the double-page spread and find each one. Careful observers will spot Snowflake in each of the book's drawings (it's hard to hide that cute pink tongue). Reviewer: Sheilah Egan
