Synopsis

Discusses the history and political conditions of Vietnam and examines the situation of Vietnamese refugees, their immigration, social adjustments, employment, and ...

School Library Journal

Gr 6-10-After giving historical background as to why the Vietnamese left their homeland, this lucid, well-organized text goes on to describe their departure, reception in the U.S., initial and continuing problems of assimilation, successes, and future outlook. First-person accounts, some in sidebars, expand and enliven the work. There are, however, numerous typographical errors, the worst being the use of dummy text for a picture caption, and a few factual errors: 2.6 million, not a half million, U.S. soldiers participated in the war; and it is unlikely that North Vietnam imported rice from California, given the U.S. trade embargo with that country. The dull format features double columns of text on each page and black-and-white photographs with an occasional fuzzy gray one. Despite its flaws, the volume updates Alexandra Bandon's Vietnamese Americans (New Discovery, 1994; o.p.) and provides useful report material.-Diane S. Marton, Arlington County Library, VA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
