School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up-A revision of a book that explores a topic of high interest to all who attend school each day. It is well organized and presents both sides of each issue in a comprehensive manner. Carefully selected primary-source articles are laid out in an approachable format. A list of organizations involved in this social issue will be useful to researchers who want to dig deeper. Even if you own the older book by Carol Wekesser (Greenhaven, 1995; o.p.), this edition is a worthwhile purchase since it has a new focus and an entirely new selection of articles. Victoria Sherrow's Violence and the Media (Millbrook, 1996.) is more of an overview written for students, which makes it more superficial. In this day, when educators are encouraged to teach with primary sources, this is a good choice for all collections.- Sandra L.
