Gr 3-6-These well-organized books introduce historical and contemporary women of varied races and nationalities. Rebels profiles activists Angela Davis, Dolores Ibarruri, Wangari Maathai, Bernadette Devlin McAliskey, Rigoberta Mench , and Emmeline Pankhurst. Artists contains sketches of Julie Andrews, Frida Kahlo, Natalia Makarova, Georgia O'Keeffe, Madonna, and Buffy Sainte-Marie. Both books are visually pleasing with clear, colorful photographs and sidebars that give facts about each individual. Many of these figures have not previously been covered in biographical materials for children, especially those in Rebels. One shortcoming is that there is not really enough material on any one person for reports. However, both titles are suitable for browsing and for giving children some idea of the enormous variety of accomplishments of women around the world.-Anne Parker, Milton Public Library, MA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
