Synopsis

Written by a pioneering leader in the development of vitreoretinal surgical techniques and instruments, this volume is a comprehensive how-to guide to all vitreoretinal procedures. This thoroughly updated Fourth Edition describes many new techniques and refinements of established procedures. More than 160 three-dimensional full-color illustrations—many by the Charles Retina Institute's resident medical artist, Byron Wood—enable surgeons to clearly visualize the techniques.

This edition features a brand-new chapter on small diameter (25-gauge) sutureless transconjunctival vitrectomy, and presents state-of-the-art information on anti-VEGF therapy for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and venous occlusive disease. Other highlights include new information on intravitreal Kenalog and new strategies for managing retinopathy of prematurity.

Reviewer: Justin C. Brown, MD (Johns Hopkins Hospital)
Description: This book explores all major vitreoretinal topics in a concise and well-organized manner with excellent schematic illustrations. The third edition represents a 15-year update in surgical techniques.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an update of the many new technologies and techniques that have been introduced over the past 15 years. The history of vitreoretinal surgery spans only the past 30 years and has been characterized by incredible successes, disappointing shortcomings, and ongoing controversies. Due to the rapidly evolving nature of this field, the second edition had become badly outdated and of questionable utility. This new edition succeeds in filling in the gaps and bringing the reader up-to-date.
Audience: Although it is not explicitly stated, the book seems to be written for the beginning vitreoretinal surgeon (fellowship and junior attending levels). However, the book contains such a wealth of clinical pearls accumulated over Dr Charles' distinguished career that I believe even the most experienced vitreoretinal specialist would find it a useful resource.
Features: The book encompasses all major vitreoretinal topics as well as several surgical techniques currently under investigation. The book is concise, well-organized, and well-written. The numerous schematic illustrations of various techniques are outstanding. The book's only objective shortcoming is that much of the nonsurgical discussion of diabetic retinopathy is outdated or incorrect. Subjectively, I found the authors' frequent referral to themselves in the third person annoying and I question the appropriateness of Appendix B in this type of publication: "Discoveries and Inventions of Steve Charles."
Assessment: This third edition offers a thoughtful, concise, and up-to-date summary of vitreoretinal techniques. It is a "must read" for the beginning vitreoretinal specialist and represents a worthwhile resource for more seasoned surgeon.
