Library Journal

With the caveat that inclusion does not imply endorsement, Carroll has produced a useful reference work listing national and regional organizations dedicated to a wide variety of worthy causes such as alcohol abuse, child abuse, the homeless, and mental illness. He also describes where help is needed and how volunteers can most effectively provide it; a special bonus is his advice on what potential volunteers can do on their own. Names, addresses, telephone numbers, publications, together with descriptive text are accessed through a table of contents arranged by nature of concern (AIDS to Wise Giving) and two indexes (one geographic); the book also lends itself to just browsing. A good choice for public and undergraduate college libraries.-- Suzanne W. Wood, SUNY Coll . of Technology, Alfred
