Children's Literature

Author Tieck has written an easy-to-read picture book biography about Walt Disney, founder of Disney Land, a theme park where everyone can have a good time. Walter Elias Disney was born on December 5, 1901, in Chicago, Illinois. At a young age, Disney moved to a farm in Missouri with his family. Disney was a talented artist, specializing in cartoon characters. He began to take art classes at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, but he quit to enlist in the army. He drove Red Cross ambulances in Europe. He loved to draw so much that he drew on the sides of the ambulances. Disney found work drawing cartoons for advertisements. In 1923, he moved to Los Angeles, California and started the Walt Disney Company with his brother Roy. Disney became interested in animation and made many short animated films. In 1927, he created Mickey Mouse. In 1937, Disney made his first full-length feature movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Disney went on to produce many movies, including Cinderella, Mary Poppins, and Bambi. He won 24 Academy Awards. Walt Disney died in 1966 at the age of 65. After his death, The Walt Disney Company continued his work. The company still makes movies, cartoons, and television shows for young and old alike to enjoy. Back material includes important dates and words and a list of websites. Reviewer: Della A. Yannuzzi
