This selection of opinion pieces by the influential New York Times columnist is a sequel to Sketches in the Sand (1967). Reston has chosen a cross section of 88 columns fromn 1967 to 1985. He is more selective here than in the earlier collection (which was far longer), and much less repetitive. Rather than using a chronological arrangement, Reston has grouped his columns into nine broad catgories (e.g., ``The Press,'' ``The Presidents,'' ``Reflections on America''). The result is a thoughtful personal look at the past two decades of American life and politics. Included are Reston's 1971 ``Letters from China'' and several nostalgic pieces on campus radicalism in the late 1960s. For public and academic libraries. Thomas A. Karel, Franklin & Marshall Coll.
