In contrast to most of the historical literature, which has concentrated on Washington's approach to developing a policy toward the communist-controlled mainland, Finkelstein examines the concomitant policy debate that centered around the question of how to deal with the Nationalist holdout regime on Taiwan--a story particularly intriguing because "the evidence clearly indicates that had North Korea not invaded the south in June 1950 the United States would not have intervened with military force to prevent the fall of Taiwan to a communist invasion." Note: CiP has the title and subtitle reversed. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
