Children's Literature

Designed for early readers, Waste Not uses photos and a strong, clear layout to interest kids in the process of recycling. While not saying anything new to older readers (is there much new to say about recycling?) Weber's writing is dynamic and the pictures show a nice cross-section of the community recycling various types of products. The "Do You Know" boxes contain facts about the virtues of recycling and some of the depressing problems of garbage. For example, page five explains 'For every ton of paper that people recycle, they save seventeen trees from being cut down to make new paper." On page ten the message is not so cheerful. "Plastic bags, candy wrappers, and other trash may end up in rivers and oceans. Animals may think it is food and choke to death on it." The book includes a Table of Contents, Index, Glossary and section titled Learn More. There are 243 words in the book, some of them used more than once. 2003, Spyglass Books/Compass Point Books, Hansen
