Water is one of the most abundant substances on Earth, as well as one of the most unique. Water is the only element that can be found naturally as a gas, a solid, and a liquid, and because water is always moving and moves easily, it is also a source of tremendous energy. The difficulty comes in harnessing that energy; water is necessary for life and found in abundance all over the world, but is also a destructive force. Several different ways of harnessing the power of water are presented in this brief introduction. From the earliest attempts to use water as an energy source in the form of water wheels to geothermal power plants and experimental and theoretical techniques, each method is presented in simple detail.
