Synopsis

Children's Literature

Part of the "Simple Science" series, this book explains the water cycle, how rivers flow through Earth, and water treatment. While individual spreads have good writing, the book overall lacks a coherent theme. It appears that anything connected with water is eligible to be on the pages, so we move from learning about early irrigation methods with no discussion of waterwheels, to exploring underwater and waves. "The water in seas and oceans is moving all the time. On the surface, the water moves up and down in waves. When a wave reaches the shore, it moves forward and breaks over the sand." Like the other books in this series, the illustrations are cartoon characters plus photos. One of the few cartoons of a non-white person in this book shows a black man dressed in an animal skin, stirring a gigantic pot of soup with jungle plants all around him. Since other people in the same spread are shown in modern dress, it is hard to forgive this image. Like the rest of this series, this book is not recommended. Back matter includes a quiz, glossary, and index. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
