Overview

Written by the leading experts in the field, the best selling book on UMTS is now updated to cover 3GPP High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) evolution (HSPA+) in Release 7 and on-going Long Term Evolution (LTE) activity for Release 8. These technologies enhance the capabilities of the existing WCDMA/HSPA networks to offer higher data rates beyond 100 Mbps.

WCDMA for UMTS, Fourth Edition also covers 3GPP WCDMA Release 99, High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) in Release 5 and High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) in Release 6, which are already deployed commercially. Multimedia Broadcast Multicast System (MBMS) is also described in detail.

Key updates include:

* Continues to provide both updated descriptions of the 3GPP standard as well as the latest end user and system performance estimates

* Updated HSDPA and HSUPA, including link budgets and Iub dimensioning

* Detailed MBMS description

* 3GPP Release 7 HSPA evolution full description

* 3GPP Release 8 LTE overall description and 3GPP schedule

* Dedicated chapter on terminal design challenges for the new high speed radio technologies

The Barnes & Noble Review
The second edition of WCDMA for UMTS delivers the goods for anyone already well versed in the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS). This book is not a read for the curious or even for the serious student just undertaking the study of basic third generation (3G) multimedia communications design and operation concepts related to UMTS or any Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) system (IS-95, CDMA 2000). It's a very serious refresher designed to provide state-of-the-art engineering concepts for individuals immersed in development and deployment of 3G communications systems, including service providers, manufacturers, and frequency regulators.

Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) is discussed as the premier third-generation air interface in the world. The authors begin with an excellent introduction to 3G air interfaces, spectrum allocation, time schedule, and the main differences from second-generation (2G) air interfaces. Chapter 2 shows you hands-on examples of how to use UMTS applications and concept phones. Next, the authors introduce the background and principles of the WCDMA air interface, spreading, Rake receiver, power control, handovers, global harmonization process, and standardization. The remaining pages provide a treasure chest of very useful information on the WCDMA standard and its performance.

The need for establishing standards as a method of delivering universal systems that work together seamlessly has been well established in many areas of technology. Wireless communications is no exception. This book does an outstanding job of documenting and elucidating the relevant standards. John Vacca
