Traces how Douglass (1817-95) and Garrison (1805-79) drew on the tradition of Biblical prophecy in their common struggle against slavery, intemperance, and the oppression of women and minorities. Finds in their work the four pillars of prophecy: achieving the values of freedom and justice for all people, criticizing the existing order for betraying those values, concrete action to lessen the difference between those values and reality, and continued prophetic scrutiny and futuristic projection. Also notes that Douglass was more astute than Garrison in seeing the need for constitutional measures and long- range planning. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)Book Details
