Overview

A baby who won't respond to its parents...A seven-year-old's persistent bed-wetting...a young daredevil who's begun to court real danger...a little girl who's selfish and rude - and friendless... As all parents know, the challenges of child rearing can often seem overwhelming. Jane Marks, the well-known columnist of "We Have a Problem" from Parents Magazine, brings together, in this collection, her wise and thoughtful "stories" about the triumphs and trials of being a parent. We Have a Problem: A Parent's Sourcebook addresses the predictable and unexpected challenges inherent in raising a family - from developmental tasks gone awry to fears and fantasies, puzzling behavior, separation, divorce, blending families, and death, dying, and bereavement. And, although these columns are about problems, they are also about solutions - about the ways in which resilient families can, and do, work things out. Each column is told in two voices; the parent's voice, explaining the difficulty in the family and the reason for seeking help; and the counselor's voice, offering expert advice in an approachable and compassionate manner. Marks shows that tapping into another family's dynamics often gives us tremendous insights into recognizing and understanding our own. And although these stories may not reflect the particular difficulties in your family, the coping mechanisms described will help you face your greatest challenge: parenting.

Even the best of families face a variety of parenting problems. From inappropriate behavior to unexpected problems to tragic events, popular Parents Magazine columnist Jane Marks offers parents tremendous insight into coping strategies that offer new hope for change and growth.

Editorials

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly

Collected from Marks's column in Parents magazine, the entries here examine many kinds of family problems, ranging from concerns about a disturbed adopted child to a young girl's response to being raped. In each case an anxious parent describes the crisis; then a professional (most of them are from the New York City and Boston areas) details his or her response, which often calls for a course of sessions with the family. These compressed case histories deal with such issues as eating and sleeping difficulties, substance abuse, sibling rivalry, school problems, birth defects, divorce and death. Marks's implicit suggestion that people can overcome grave troubles swiftly and smoothly, along with the repetitive nature of her case histories, diminishes the impact of the generally sound advice she offers. Library Journal

This book is a collection of stories from Marks's ``We Have a Problem'' column in Parent's Magazine . It contains physical, psychological, emotional, and discipline problems affecting children of all ages. Marks covers a wide range of problems affecting children of all ages: adopted and blended families, death and grieving, developmental tasks, difficult behavior, divorce and separation, eating problems, fears and fantasies, illness, parenting dilemmas, and much more. Parents will appreciate the useful solutions to common problems. Marks also shows that therapy can be employed for all sorts of difficulties (however, after reading through all the case histories, the reader may think that all children need to be in therapy!). Recommended for most parenting collections.-- Jennifer Langlois, Missouri Western State Coll. Lib., St. Joseph

Marks writes the "Parents Magazine" column "We Have a Problem." Within a typical installment, she responds to a problem described by a parent with solutions offered by physicians, counselors, and other specialists. Gathering those columns, this book demonstrates the many avenues of specialized help that are available, as well as collocates four years' worth of solutions to individual problems. Among the issues it addresses are adoption, divorce, learning disabilities, sibling warfare, bereavement, child abuse, drug addiction, and sleep disturbances. Its anecdotal format, according to Marks, "will deepen your understanding, enhance your own coping strategies, and give you assurance that even the most difficult situations can lead to good change, healing, and growth."
