Children's Literature
This primary-age-focused picture book tells the story of a newly born lamb and his shyness around others. Out in the meadow with his mother, the lamb meets a number of potential meadow friendsa bunny, a cricket, a robin, and an owlbut is too scared to engage with any of them in playing, singing, or exploring the world of the meadow. Then the lamb meets a little mouse who is every bit as shy as he is; recognizing like spirits, the two become friends and find out how enjoyable playing with someone else is. . . as long as you do not have to leave the shadow of your mothers. The illustrations are rendered in acrylic paint and colored pencils, giving the pictures a soft, gentle feel that corresponds effectively with the tone of the book. This would be an easy book for a young reader as there is a great deal of repetition of words and sound clusters throughout the book. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
