This picture book introduction to Jordan contains essential information complemented with many full-color photographs. A description of the land area of the country is followed by a brief summary of the country's long and varied history, beginning in 1200 B.C. and continuing through the present. Major rulers and policy makers are mentioned, and the organization of the present day government is described. Jordan is highlighted as one of the most peaceful and stable nations of the Middle East. Information about the Islam religion is accompanied by a photograph of the beautiful Blue Dome Mosque. Although most of the people of Jordan are Muslim, about 6% of the population is Christian. Aspects of family life, lifestyles, language, the arts, leisure activities, and foods are included. Works of major poets and authors provide examples of cultural contributions. A map of Jordan and the surrounding nations, quick facts, a glossary, a bibliography, and an index make this a good source of information for young researchers. This is part of the "Welcome to My County" series. 2005, Gareth Stevens, Ages 6 to 10.
