Overview

In this unique anthology, poets and photographers from cultures all over the world celebrate the mysterious, vulnerable, and awesome world of new babies. From pregnancy through the first few months of infancy, these words and images combine feelings of hope and wonder, surprise and delight, fear and fascination at the special power of babies to move us.

A cumulative rhyme in which a greedy parrot keeps taking fruit from the other creatures of the rainforest until he can hold no more.

Publishers Weekly

A collection of poems from around the globe accompanies striking photographs of babies with similarly diverse backgrounds in Welcome to the World: A Celebration of Birth and Babies from Many Cultures, edited by Nikki Siegen-Smith. More than a dozen photographers (credited in the back) contribute the images herein, such as Carlos Reyes-Manzo's poignant image of a grandmother in humble accommodations but with joy on her face as she holds her grandchild. The photo beautifully illustrates "Praise of a Child," an anonymous poem that begins, "A child is like a rare bird./ A child is precious like coral." Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

School Library Journal

Gr 9 UpA collection of 20 poems that reflect the intermingled joy and pain of childbirth and babies. The poets, both well known and obscure, represent cultures from around the world, and include Erica Jong and Sylvia Plath from the U.S., Su Shih from China, and Bibhu Padhi from India. Subjects range from conception and birth to midnight feedings and the wishes a parent bestows on her child. Each verse is paired with an exquisite, full-page, black-and-white photograph. For example, a picture of an Asian doctor cradling a baby is paired with a poem on the birthing process by a Southeast Asian woman. Although this book is extremely well done, it is difficult to imagine its place in a children's collection. The content of most of the poems is more suitable for adults, as are some of the pictures. Most express a parent's point of view.Melissa Hudak, North Suburban District Library, Roscoe, IL
