Synopsis

Provides an easy-to-read introduction to the life of whales and their habitat.

School Library Journal

Gr 1-3-These primer-sized volumes give basic facts about the featured animals using bland, controlled vocabulary. Each page of large-print text faces a full-color photograph that is sometimes sharp and clear, sometimes not. The amount and quality of the information is slight. "Some dogs help police officers. Dogs can help police officers catch bad people." Each volume ends with a four-term picture dictionary, some more applicable to the subject than others. Since the stated purpose of these volumes is not for information gathering but as texts to be used with emergent Hispanic readers and for children learning Spanish, their most appropriate home is in reading programs or ESL collections. Libraries will do better with the "Eyewitness Juniors" series (Knopf) or the "El facinante mundo de" books (Norma) for more in-depth and accurate treatments of animal and insect life.
