School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-A clearly written and well-organized introduction to and overview of whales, written in a question-and-answer format. Full-color photographs appear on every page, amplifying the information. There are also pronounciation guides and many excellent full-color diagrams. The chapter on whales and people presents a balanced view of the difference between native peoples who hunt whales as they have for centuries without posing a threat to their very existence and the modern hunting techniques that threaten these creatures with extinction. A compact summary of the kinds of whales presents a good picture of the different families and species. The small, half-page index is spare but effective.-Frances E. Millhouser, Chantilly Regional Library, VA
