Library Journal

Volunteers can make a difference, and the intention of this book is to encourage individuals to get involved with organizations that suit their interests. Unfortunately, good intentions do not make a good sourcebook. A few personal testimonies, some pertinent quotations, and briefly annotated lists of organizations are not enough to justify purchase of this. In the low-price paperback category, try Andrew Carroll's Volunteer USA ( LJ 4/15/91), which does include indexes and has better annotations for its listed organizations. Many libraries, however, will choose the more expensive and more comprehensive Vol unteerism: The Directory of Organiza tions, Training, Programs, and Publica tions ( LJ 9/1/91; $104.95).-- Ellen McDermott, NYNEX Corp., White Plains, N.Y.
