Children's Literature

This is a basic, well-illustrated description for early readers of the work of a police officer. The simple text is arranged in nine spreads labeled in a table of contents as if they are chapters. Each "chapter" contains a left-hand page photo illustration and a right-hand page of two to seven sentences of text. Some sample chapter headings are: "Where do Police Officers Work?" "What Do Police Officers Wear?" "Inside a Police Car" and "Police Officers are Heroes." Additionally, the book has a glossary, a hands-on fingerprinting activity, a resource page listing books and Internet sites for further reading, and an index. The glossary, or "Words to Know" page, has been placed at the front of the book and includes the words "accident," "emergency," "equipment," "laws," "police officer," and "sirens." This title is part of a series called "What Does A Community Helper Do?" that also includes books describing the job of firefighter, EMT, mail carrier and sanitation worker. 2005, Enslow Publishers, Ages 5 to 8.
