Synopsis

Describes what different parts of the face look like when a person is surprised.

Children's Literature

This book describes and shows what happens to a person's face when they are surprised. The left page tells what happens in one to three lines. A full page photograph of a child on the right page shows what happens. The children in the photos are of diverse gender, racial, and ethnic backgrounds. Some of the facial movements shown are raised eyebrows, open mouths, dropped chins, teeth being more visible, nostrils looking larger, cheeks lifting, and, noticeable in the photos but not mentioned in the text, eyes widening. The book is a part of a series called "Let's Look at Feelings." There is a content page at the beginning and a glossary and an index at the back. That page has thumbnails of the facial features mentioned. There is also a list of additional websites relating to the subject. The book would make great reading for a preschool class who would enjoy mimicking the various expressions. Reviewer: Christine Cassello

K-Gr 1-One must wonder just what purpose these books serve. Each one has close-up color photos of young children expressing the indicated emotion. The spare text, one sentence per page, doesn't add much-e.g., "I am happy-. When I am happy my cheeks look round-. There are lines on my nose when I am happy." Each volume concludes with a list of six "Words to Know," each illustrated with a small photo. Indexes, if they can be termed as such, are also included ("cheeks," "eyes," "laugh," and three more similar entries make up the entire index in Happy). The "Thoughts and Feelings" series (The Child's World) is far more useful.-Kate Kohlbeck, Randall School, Waukesha, WI Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
