Children's Literature
Sight is one of the five sensesthe one that we use to see things in the world. After inviting the readers to consider how they use their sense of sight, there is a very simple description of how the eye works. A diagram shows how the image is upside down when it stimulates the retina. Children may have a difficult time understanding how the eye and light work and additional activities that help to understand the concept may be needed to support what occurs when light enters the pupil. The following chapters explain how people use their sense of sight to see colors and to keep safe. Also, the readers examine how they can see items close up or at a distance. There are lots of colorful and bright photographs. Some of the photographs have captions that provide additional information. At the end of the book, there is one activity on depth perception. The activity could use a diagram to support the directions so that the children know how to hold the cotton swabs. Readers will find a glossary, an index, and a list of additional books and a website. This book is a part of the "Your Amazing Senses" series which covers the five senses; the organization and format of the books are similar. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
