Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung

Texture is the way that something feels like smooth, rough, or soft. Artists have ways to create texture. Read about how artists use texture and examine different works of art in terms of texture. For instance a bumpy texture is created with heavy layers of paint like in van Gogh's The Starry Night. There are examples of different artists' works to illustrate the concept. The piece of art is captioned with the name of the work and the artist, and there is an inset to help direct the reader's attention to the technique used in the work. Some readers may need some guidance or introduction to the informational text features. For further exploration on art, a few book titles and websites are listed. This book is a part of the "Get Art Smart" series. Check out the other books in the series to learn about other art concepts such as shape, form, color, space, and line. The books in the series follow a similar format and presentation; the collection provides opportunities for beginners to discuss art and techniques. The book makes a nice addition for art lessons or art appreciation units. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung

K-Gr 3–These books describe and explain concepts, techniques, and phenomena in art in a collaborative, first-person plural tone that uses accessible, well-thought-out phrases. Concrete visual examples are in the form of frequent and excellent reproductions of fine art in a variety of mediums. Although the examples are, for the most part, drawn from the Western canon, Egyptian, Japanese, and Native American art also make appearances. An exceptionally spacious layout gives each concept room to breathe. Even children who regularly employ the relevant techniques will benefit from the explanations and illustrations in these books. The authors also provide short but excellent lists of print and online further-reading. Respectable and respectful resources.
