In this Lift-the-Flap Pop-up Book, readers travel through the jungle and encounter toucans and their chicks veiled behind leaves and a zebra peeking through the vines, among others. The sense of discovery turns into surprise and even a little apprehension when a crocodile extends its open mouth far outside the page, followed by a climactic pop-up of a tiger's face. The illustrations and design elements conjure up the experience of adventure and uncertainty; the sea-green haze of jungle growth conceals all manner of life, color and motion. Ages 2-5. PreS The discovery of jungle animals becomes a real adventure in this nicely constructed and illustrated lift-the-flap and pop-up book. The eight double-page spreads have poster art watercolor illustrations of unusual shades of green and blue which create dark jungle scenes. Flaps and/or pop-ups reveal brightly colored animals. Lift a leaf and find a toucan while butterflies pop out from behind orchids. Monkeys swing; a crocodile yawns; and a tiger head, complete with gaping jaws, springs out. The language is simple, with one line of text per page. ``What's looking through the vines? A nosey zebra.'' This book and toy combination will delight toddlers and preschoolers because they can participate in the story and enjoy the surprises along the way. Because of its fragile nature it will be best for story time rather than for general circulation. Debby Jeffery, San Francisco Public LibraryBook Details
