Overview

What would you see if you sat at the edge of a tidepool, looked into the water and watched the changes taking place in this little world? What life would you discover there? In a charming hand-sized book, Anne Hunter illustrates the creatures that live in and around a tidepool, and describes each animal's characteristics and habits. The gorgeous artwork and simple sense of wonder will inspire children to explore their environment. Fans of Hunter’s two books, WHAT'S IN THE POND? and WHAT'S UNDER THE LOG? will want to add this new title to their collection.

Describes various forms of life found in tide pools and how they survive, discussing such animals as barnacles, ruddy turnstones, and sea anemones.

What do you find when peeking into a tide pool? This small-sized book provides a short, scientific description of the seemingly delicate tide pool creatures that can withstand extreme conditions, from drying air and sun at low tide to pounding waves at high tide. The author/illustrator informs the reader about food, movement and size of ten tide pool creatures¾the periwinkle, the ruddy turnstone, the blue mussel, the sea anemone, the green crab, the barnacles, the sea star, the herring gull, the green sea urchin, and the hermit crab. Each description is accompanied by a full-color illustration that combines watercolor, colored pencil, and ink. A nice book for children with a keen interest in nature and creatures. Children who are less enthusiastic about the topic might find the text and the illustrations a little bland. The format of this book is similar to Hunter's book, What's in the Meadow? 2000, Houghton Mifflin Company, $4.95. Ages 4 to 9. Reviewer: Ute Krappen-Clancy

Kirkus Reviews

What's in a tide pool? Periwinkles, a ruddy turnstone, a blue mussel, sea anemone, barnacles, and more. This teeny tiny book (only five inches square), just right for small hands, introduces ten creatures that live in and around the tide pool. Each is described in a brief paragraph with an accompanying illustration. Creatures are not drawn to scale, so the small quarter-inch barnacle appears as large as the 25-inch herring gull. And scientific names are not given. Still, the watercolor-and-ink illustrations invite careful looking. The text, while brief, is difficult, e.g., "The sea urchin's shell, called a test, is covered with protective moving spines to deter predators." The modest price makes this title appealing for home purchase, but the small size and lack of references make it less useful for school and public libraries. (Nonfiction. 5-8)
