Synopsis
What would you see if you sat at the edge of a tidepool, looked into the water and watched the changes taking place in this little world? What life would you discover there? In a charming hand-sized book, Anne Hunter illustrates the creatures that live in and around a tidepool, and describes each animal's characteristics and habits. The gorgeous artwork and simple sense of wonder will inspire children to explore their environment. Fans of Hunter’s two books, WHAT'S IN THE POND? and WHAT'S UNDER THE LOG? will want to add this new title to their collection.

What do you find when peeking into a tide pool? This small-sized book provides a short, scientific description of the seemingly delicate tide pool creatures that can withstand extreme conditions, from drying air and sun at low tide to pounding waves at high tide. The author/illustrator informs the reader about food, movement and size of ten tide pool creatures the periwinkle, the ruddy turnstone, the blue mussel, the sea anemone, the green crab, the barnacles, the sea star, the herring gull, the green sea urchin, and the hermit crab. Each description is accompanied by a full-color illustration that combines watercolor, colored pencil, and ink. A nice book for children with a keen interest in nature and creatures. Children who are less enthusiastic about the topic might find the text and the illustrations a little bland. The format of this book is similar to Hunter's book, What's in the Meadow? 2000, Houghton Mifflin Company, $4.95. Ages 4 to 9. Reviewer: Ute Krappen-Clancy
