School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-Tim, his older sister, and their parents are spending two weeks on vacation at an old house. Tim thinks it's haunted, but Amy reassures him that ghosts don't exist. Every noise that the boy interprets as spooky, his sister is able to explain. For example, the tapping at their bedroom window at night is a moth bumping against the screen. After each such incident, illustrated sidebars with very small print explain the how and why of sound in a scientific manner. By the end of the story, Tim becomes brave; he hears a low moaning sound and, against Amy's advice, he decides to investigate and discovers a man practicing the tuba. Colorful cartoon illustrations appear on every page. Appended related activities include directions for making a kazoo and suggestions for a sound code.-Wendy S.
