Raking leaves, airing quilts, biting into crisp red apples, starting school, and eating Thanksgiving dinner are a few of the many seasonal activities shown in this photo essay. Maass, a skilled photographer, fills his pictures with autumnal colors, symbols, and the changes in town what appears to be New England and countryside. However, the book assumes a ``universal truth'' tone. Autumn is not the same throughout the world nor even throughout the U. S. Chopping and stacking wood is not a sight familiar to all children; even most adults have never seen chimney sweeps at work. And in this rural autumn, only white people are pictured.
