Raking leaves, airing quilts, biting into crisp red apples, starting school, and eating Thanksgiving dinner are a few of the many seasonal activities shown in this photo essay. Maass, a skilled photographer, fills his pictures with autumnal colors, symbols, and the changes in town what appears to be New England and countryside. However, the book assumes a ``universal truth'' tone. Autumn is not the same throughout the world nor even throughout the U. S. Chopping and stacking wood is not a sight familiar to all children; even most adults have never seen chimney sweeps at work. And in this rural autumn, only white people are pictured. The change of seasons is a perennial subject, so there will certainly be demand for this beautiful photo essay. --Louise L. Sherman, Anna C. Scott School, Leonia, NJFrom the Publisher

"A cozy and evocative photo essay, replete with the many familiar colors and activities of the fall season....The spare text suits the seasons perfectly, and Maass's carefully chosen subjects go about their chores seemingly unaware of the camera's eye."--Publishers Weekly
