Gr 4-6-- The depth of information in these competent introductions varies from title to title, but the color photographs illustrating the texts are consistently excellent. Dewitt's title succinctly describes the characteristics, diet, hunting and feeding techniques, geographical range, nesting habits, average number of eggs, and habitats of over 50 species of predatory birds in North America. It is more detailed and describes more species than Petty's Birds of Prey (Gloucester, 1987). Cockroaches describes the insect's anatomy, general physical and behavioral characteristics, special characteristics of eight species found in the U.S., geographical range, and enemies. Eight simple experiments involving roaches and their response to stimuli are also outlined. More detailed than Cole's Cockroaches (Morrow, 1971; o.p.), this title's photos of common species will be useful in identifying local pests. Ferrell's book examines the instinctive devices various animals employ either to elude predators or to capture prey. Although clearly written and well-organized, this title omits some data. Only common names of species are given and, occasionally, animals are described but not named. Ziter's book tells of a Florida family's encounters with local conservationists who find and relocate sea turtle eggs. A chapter on the history of humankind's exploitation of sea turtles is included. Although illustrated with excellent photos, Ziter's text is cluttered with dull dialogue and hyperbole. Ancona's Turtle Watch (Macmillan, 1987) provides more information on sea turtles and is written in a more straightforward style. --Karey Wehner, San Francisco Public LibraryBook Details
