Library Journal

From the Havana Beach to the Mint Julep, these two petite collections of cocktail recipes offer a nice sampling of tempting libations. In addition to some snippets of history and a few practical ideas about making and serving cocktails, both of Biggs's books provide clear and easy-to-understand recipes for 32 different rum- or whiskey and bourbon-based drinks. Because of the focused and rather narrow range of each of these books, smaller public libraries will find neither one to be a practical substitute for other, more comprehensive books on cocktails, e.g., Katherine Williams's The Cultured Cocktail: 150 Classic Drinks from the Jazz Age to the Space Age or Dale DeGroff's much more expensive but truly essential The Craft of the Cocktail: Everything You Need To Know To Be a Master Bartender. Still, these cute, colorful, and inexpensive little books would be welcome additions to any medium or large public library where readers celebrate the cocktail hour.-John Charles, Scottsdale P.L., AZ Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
