Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen

Part of the "Breakthroughs in Science and Technology" series, Williams follows that car from its beginning as a humble horseless carriage to the present day hybrid engine. The invention, like many that are covered in this interesting series, did not come about easily or directly. Richard Trevithick built a steam carriage in the early 1800s. Steam, however, was not easy to use, and the roads were not as easy to ride as they are today. A little later, Etienne Lenoir built an internal combustion engine using gas. The engine was used in factories, not for cars. While we eventually arrive at the modern car, the overall answer to the title is "lots of people." There are many steps involved in creating a car, the roads to drive it on, and the gasoline to power it. Williams does not oversimplify the process, but manages to keep it interesting. Each chapter fits into an attractive two-page spread, along with photos, diagrams and short sidebars. This book will work well for both history and science discussions. Backmatter includes glossary, further information, and an index. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
