Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

In this lift-the-flap-board book, the big question is "Who's at Home?" Young kids are given a clue such as "I hide crunchy nuts in my hollow tree" and when asked the question about who is home the answer should be "I'm a squirrel." The same pattern is followed for a bear, rabbit, owl and beaver. The closing spread reveals all these animals in their homes located in the woods. Kids can be asked to point to or name the animals in this scene. They could also learn the names of some of these animals' homes such as a bear's den, beaver lodge and rabbit burrow. It would take a parent or caregiver to add that extra information. The illustrations are simple and more toward the cartoon side than being realistic depictions of the animals, but they are clear enough that kids should be able to recognize and name them.
