Children's Literature - Peg Glisson

Voting is a form of group decision making and is an important right in any democracy. The very brief text discusses who can vote, what leaders are elected, and when elections occur, layering down from federal to state to local elections. This is the weakest entry in the "Weekly Reader Know Your Government" series; the text is very brief, and the photos and captions do not enhance the text as well as in the other books in the series. A photo of Mondale and Reagan debating seems out of place among photos taken since 2002. Concepts are understandable but not as developed as they are in the series' other offerings. Words defined in the glossary are in bold type; also included are a brief index and suggested books and web sites for finding out more. The book is short but offers considerable basic information in an understandable way. It would serve young readers first learning about government or possibly older elementary students needing information presented more simply. Reviewer: Peg Glisson
