Gr 4-6These British imports are chock-full of interesting and entertaining facts. The format consists of one or two sentence entries with a small detailed drawing, which makes these books acceptable items for pleasure browsing or for beginning research projects. The full-color cartoons add a humorous touch. Why Do We Wear That? examines fashions from World War II styles to the present, as well as some details about historical clothing. Why Do We Use That? contains enough information to satisfy anyone with an assignment relating to inventions, beginning with the bathroom. All sorts of facts about the origins of toothbrushes, pencils, gardening gadgets, and toys and games are included. While the "Eyewitness" books on Costume (1992) and Invention (1991, both Knopf) have full-color photos, the format in these newer titles is similar, with a touch of humor added. Trivia lovers' delights.Janet M. Bair, Trumbull Library, CT
