Overview

This Conservative Book Club Alternative Selection, here in its revised, first paperback edition, makes a powerful argument that the principles of Judaism are at odds with the realities of modern liberalism. Larry F. Sternberg chronicles how President Roosevelt wooed Jewish voters to the liberal cause during the Great Depression, despite documented historical evidence proving that Jews are better served by America's conservative leadership. Topics discussed include government interference, gun control, abortion, affirmative action, and healthcare.

In his first book, politics and religion enthusiast Sternberg, an active member of the Republican Jewish Coalition, argues that the principles of Judaism are at odds with the practices of liberalism today. He employs Bible and Talmud verses and draws on history to show that Jews are instead better served by America's conservative leaderships. Topics he covers include government interference, gun control, abortion, and healthcare. The chapter on affirmative action argues that it is more just to reward on the basis of merit rather than because of a political agenda and points to the injustices of punishing one generation for the wrongs of a generation decades past. While a collection of philosopher Leo Strauss's writings appears here under the title "Liberalism Ancient and Modern," it would have been nice to read even more about the neocon ideas he's influenced. Allan Bloom's The Closing of the American Mind, with its condemnation of liberal Beat-generation influences, also should have been cited by Sternberg to add further substance to his claims. Recommended for public libraries, political science collections, and think-tank political policy organizations as well as for libraries with interest in conservative politics.-David B. Arguing that the unconstrained expansion of the free market system is an objective good and that liberals wish to use state power to squash freedom, Orange County CPA Sternberg argues that "liberalism in its modern form holds to positions that are contrary to Jewish law and tradition," while American conservatism is a perfect match. Sternberg applies this insight to such issues as capitalism, abortion, education, affirmative action, gun control, "class warfare," universal healthcare, and the Religious Right, finding that on every issue, God's laws are in accord with the conservative agenda.
