Synopsis
Hickman (education, Cambridge U., UK) draws from his own experiences as a practicing artist and art educator, and information gathered from interviews with artists, students and others who create art, to explore the artistic process and the motivating force behind it. Coverage includes an overview of the nature of art and its relationship to education; excerpts from conversations and reflections of the interviewees which offer a psychological perspective on their art-making experiences; issues in art and learning, such as the artistic personality, the nature and purpose of imagination, expression and personal fulfillment, self-identity and self-esteem, school and schooling; and the notion of "creating aesthetic significance" as a fundamental urge.
