Children's Literature - Marcie Flinchum Atkins

Children always have lots of questions about things that fascinate them, and this book answers dozens of questions they might have about pirates. From defining who pirates were to giving short biographies of famous pirates, to women pirates, this title covers pirates from all angles, giving it great kid-appeal. The book is set up in a question and answer format with several questions and answers on each page. Answers are short and there are multiple illustrations on each page, making it a perfect match for a reader who is interested in pirates, but does not want to (or cannot) read a lengthy text. The text is also arranged so that it does not have to be read in any particular order. Readers can skip around to whatever information interests them, or look up particular questions in the table of contents. This book would appeal especially to the interest and reading level of intermediate elementary school students. Suggested activities that relate to the text are also included. Illustrations include both realistic drawings and cartoon drawings of the information from the text. The back of the book includes a quiz on fun facts in the book. An index is also included. This book is lacking a bibliography for verification of facts, and does not provide young readers additional resources for other books on the same topic. This book is one in the "Why Why Why" series which covers a variety of topics in science and history. The presentation and format are similar in each of the titles. Reviewer: Marcie Flinchum Atkins
