William Randolph Hearst was born into a family of great wealth. From childhood on, Hearst was able to purchase virtually anything he wished. Despite his life of means, Hearst consistently advocated for a liberal political agenda. When given a choice by his father of what field he wished to work in, Hearst selected newspapers. Starting in San Francisco, William Randolph Hearst was to build the largest publishing corporation of his age. At the height of Hearst's publishing empire he owned twenty-two newspapers and over ten major magazines. Hearst was also a major player in the political scene as his editorial power helped shape public opinion. A father to five children, Hearst was ultimately estranged from his wife, Millicent, and spent the last thirty years of his life living with actress Marion Davies. Unsuccessful as a political candidate for a variety of positions, Hearst faced defeat on a number of occasions. Yet, resilient to the end, William Randolph Hearst was a powerful figure in America. Balancing criticism with empathy, this illustrated biography does an excellent job of tracing this complicated man's life, and a tightly constructed narrative touches upon the major events. 2001, Blackbirch Press, $21.95.
