School Library Journal

Gr 6-9-- An introduction to surf sports that covers bodyboarding, surfing, and windsurfing. Holden stresses preparation and safety throughout. He advises beginners to make sure their swimming skills are adequate before venturing into the ocean, and he devotes separate chapters to winds and currents and to dangers in the water. Also included are tips on buying boards and other gear. While much of the material is useful, it is often too general. This is especially true in the ``How It's Done'' chapter, which includes basic information but not detailed explanations or step-by-step photographs. The sidebars scattered throughout are of little use, and surfing history is sparse. Full-color action photographs and an adequate glossary help but, unfortunately, not enough. --George Delalis, Oakland Public Library, CA
